Authenticity, Self-Awareness and Courage
Can you think of someone who you consider to be truly authentic. Now why is it that you call them authentic?
Here are some phrases you are probably using:
- They are comfortable in their own skin
- They are in touch with who they are
- What you see is what you get
- They are not afraid to be themselves
- They stand up for what they believe in
- They are true to their own belief system
What you are defining is a person who knows who they are, is comfortable with who they are and has the courage to be themselves when other people push them to do otherwise. The kind of person who tells the truth or acts according to their own moral code, even when it means they may face negative consequences for doing so. The basis of authenticity is self-knowledge or self-awareness. How can you have the courage to be yourself, if you do not know what it means to be yourself? It means you spend time getting to know and like YOU. This requires self-observation and honesty. The real you is the person who shows up when you do not feel like you have to put on an act for others. Have you ever been in a situation where you could not wait to get away so that you could relax and be yourself? That is an example of you not being able to be authentic. The ability to be in that situation and relax and be yourself, THAT is an example of you having the courage to be yourself which translates to authenticity.

With its brilliantly simple formulas that illustrate universal truths, Emotional Equations is an exciting, new, and immediately accessible visual lexicon for mastering your life challenges.
In Emotional Equations, Chip Conley sets up this equation for authenticity as:
Authenticity = Self-Awareness multiplied by Courage.
Your authenticity is directly related to the more opportunity you have had to know who you are and to be true to who you are. Self-Awareness without courage is just introspection. Courage without Self-Awareness can be misguided. Self-Awareness exercised courageously on multiple occasions leads to authenticity.
