Doing The Right Thing
Back in February, I shared the quote with you. “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” Mark Twain
.
At that time I was not aware of The Responsibility Project hosted by Liberty Mutual. Liberty Mutual is an insurance company and I am not sharing ‘The Responsibility Project‘ to promote or endorse them. (Granted it is a way for them to promote themselves and their corporate values.) On their site you will find videos and blog postings all about what it means to do the right thing. You will also have the opportunity to review and discuss interesting issues, for example Hallmark cards for people who have been laid off; is this right? What do YOU think it means to do the right thing? Perhaps YOU will add to the conversation. And if you find yourself needing a short break, perhaps check out some of their videos. I just saw this one for the first time and really loved it. It is short yet powerful story of a grumpy lighthouse keeper.

Back to Mark Twain and his quote when he says “…This will gratify some people…” I think the most important person it gratifies is YOU. When YOU know that you did the right thing you can have a clear conscience. I cannot promise you that each time you do the right thing everyone walks away happy; but you walk away knowing that you were true to who you are and what you represent. Ultimately the fact that your actions clearly represent who you really are will be gratifying to others too. After all they will know who you are as a professional and as a person. It isn’t always easy to do the right thing, but it sure beats the regret that comes from doing the wrong thing!”
