What’s Your Destination?

“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” Paraphrased from an exchange between Alice and the Cheshire Cat, in Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll.

destinationUnknownA lack of a destination might be really fun if you are on vacation. To wander and explore someplace that you have never been without having a specific destination in mind could be a good break away from your daily routine.

There are definitely times when you want to have a destination in mind, an end point, a goal, etc. This is especially important when you are a leading a team. If you want to wander around in your own work without a specific thought as to where you might wind up that is your choice. If you are leading a team of people, you need to let them know where you are all headed and that you are headed in that direction – together. You do this by sharing the vision. Use words and images to show your team what it looks like to have successfully completed the project. You might even have your customer speak to the team and describe the current situation and what life will be like when the project is completed. In other words make sure your team receives a description of the destination.

Some people will be fine with just a description of the destination. They will know exactly what to do and how to do it. Others will need a description of the destination, a picture of the destination, directions and a map. Give them what they need.

A leader steers the ship and guides the team. One of the ways in which a project manager leads is in setting the vision. To support that vision a project manager ensures that scope is documented (your description and picture of the destination); and provides a plan and a schedule (your directions and your map).

Pick a destination. Projects can be adventurous enough; you don’t need to through lack of clear direction into the mix.
