Sticks and Stones
“It is as easy to draw back a stone, thrown with force from the hand, as to recall a word once spoken.”
Menander
In some ways this reminds me of that old childhood taunt, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” Of course this may have also been followed by the ever popular, “I am rubber you are glue whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you.”
Words may not physically hurt someone, but despite the rhymes from above, your words can impact others. Our ability to verbalize is a wonderful and powerful gift. When used inappropriately it can also be a terrible and powerful weapon. Once you say something, it is almost impossible to take it back. So it is better to think before you speak and let some things remain unsaid. In the words of Don Miguel Ruiz in ‘The Four Agreements’ be impeccable with your word. For more on how to be impeccable with your word and other agreements, check out the free gift I put together for you an eBook and an audio program to help you make the agreements that honor the real you. May your words work with you and not against you!
