Ten Ways to Feed Your Head

womanReadingOccasionally I hear people lament the fact that are just unable to add learning or intellectual growth to their schedule. They are just too busy with work and home to feed their brain cells. I’m not buying it! I know it is not easy, but I know that if you really want to you can spend some time learning every week. You accomplish this without a huge time or financial commitment. Here are ten easy ways and I know you can all come up with even more: 1)    You know that time you spend online, the time that just seems to disappear and you don’t know what you were looking at (other than videos of cats playing the piano)? You can still spend that time online, but spend it looking at something educational. For example, did you know you can type “free online language courses’ into your favorite search engine and find all kinds of courses in many, many languages? 2)    What about that iPod or other MP3 player that you own? You must know that it plays more than music it plays the equivalent of books on tape and other informational podcasts. 3)    How long is your commute? You can certainly listen to an audio program or book during your commute. 4)    If you prefer not to listen to audio programs or books while you drive, try switching your radio station over to something a bit more educational. It’s OK to have concerts in your car and sing or rap or whatever it is that you do, but once in awhile give some time over to some educational radio programming. 5)    Change the channel. No, I am not going to tell you to give up television (although some people do), did you know there is more available on television than crime shows, game shows and reality TV? There is, I promise. You can find history programs, science programs, travel shows etc. 6)    Read a book! There are plenty of books that are both educational and interesting. Look at the bestseller non-fiction list you will see what I mean. 7)    Read the newspaper. Yes, newspapers still exist and some of them still report current events and (gasp) – the news. 8)    Rent a documentary. Consider replacing ‘Killer Zombies from Planet Biff’ with a documentary. You don’t have to do this all of the time, but once in a while it is OK to give the killer zombies a night off. (Those zombies are tired it takes a lot of energy to be undead.) 9)    Write. Spend some time journaling or writing your story or starting a blog about a topic that interests you. Now you can learn and contribute to the learning and thinking process of others around you. 10)    Talk. Have discussions with other people about something that do not involve a celebrity in rehab or a ‘real housewife’ or someone else’s divorce.
